One of our highlights was a very successful Pumpkin Day where we used our pumpkin to estimate and find the actual measurements for weight, height, and circumference. We also did a mini fitness circuit and used our pumpkins as weights. We used candy corn to make fractals and so much more! Check out our pumpkin elevators where we used a PVC pipe, cardboard boxes, tape, and string to make an elevator with a pulley system.
We also practiced for two weeks in preparation of the Remembrance Day Assembly. We changed some of the lyrics of the French and English version of Wavin' Flag to honour the soldiers who have fought in wars and led peace keeping missions so that the world can be a safer place. Then, we recorded a video of us singing the song and put it to additional video footage for the assembly. We were really proud of the way it turned out. For the first couple recordings, we couldn't hear what each of us were saying under our masks but we think our final product showcased the true meaning behind the song.
We started our Wildnerness Wednesday Walks in the forest with Ms. Bassi's class, too. Our first walk was a shapes walk where we looked for different shapes in the forest. We were surprised to see how many actually exist once you start looking for them and noticing them.
Currently, we are working on our Real Estate Ads. As part of our math unit, we looked at the cost of living in BC and how much our dream homes would cost (downpayment and mortgage). Then, we drew our conclusions from our research and discovered that some of our dream jobs might not actually pay as much as we thought that they do (which might not actually matter too much in the end) and that even though the average downpayment people make is 20%, the more you put down, the less your mortgage becomes and so it might be time to start saving! Yoon found a penthouse in Coal Harbour for 5.5 million while Blake went for a plot of land so that he could build his dream home. Nyla-Ki found a home in Kitimat and Ava found one in Kelowna.

We looked at some of the best print ads in 2020 and then set to work on our iPads using the Apple application Pages to create ads for the school's Spooky Reading event on October 29th. Check out what we created!

We've been at school for a month now and we have been really working hard on developing our writing styles. In Language Arts, we've been working on varying our sentence structures and writing with description that uses all of our five senses. We wrote poems and paragraphs about our favourite place and are currently showcasing our work in the hallway outside of our classroom. The writing is accompanied by oil pastel art inspired by Roy Henry Vickers. In Science, we made a life-sized version of the geologic time scale (check out our photos below to see where we originally thought the events went). In Social Studies, after wrapping up a mini unit on the Canadian government and federal election, we are now beginning to look at the government in Ancient Mesopotamia. How different! In Mathematics, we've been practising our basic multiplication and division facts (to 100) and learning about the orders of operations. We've done a bunch of math challenges but our latest one was 5 4 3 2 1. Using those numbers in that order and with any operation, can you form equations to equal 1 through 40? We were so engaged that we finished it as a class in TWO days. This week also marked our first field trip as a class. We painted Rocks for Reconciliation after spending some time looking into the kid-friendly Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, reading and listening to stories from First Nations authors, as well as using native-land.ca to learn about the unceded First Nations land that our favourite places are on. Check out our photos from our walk below.

Welcome back to school! It's been months since I've been in the classroom and I couldn't be more excited to be back at school with the Grade 7s. During these last two weeks, we have been getting to know each other by making introduction Apple Clip videos where we practiced asking interesting questions and speaking clearly as well as learning how to work together while doing various tasks. We even took a personality test to see what our dominant communication styles are (driver, amiable, expressive, and analytical). We also have been busy learning about the Federal Election as the student vote is only 3 sleeps away!
